This document contains three different lists of private health insurance plans offering prescription drug coverage through Medicare Part D in 2009.

  • Stand-alone Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) in New York State
These are the private plans that only cover prescription drugs through Part D.  You should choose one of these plans if you want to keep Original Medicare and just add drug coverage.  These plans are available throughout New York State.  To compare different PDPs and find out whether they cover your drugs, visit the Medicare PlanFinder website.
  • Medicare Advantage Plans with drug coverage (MA-PDs) in New York City and Nassau County
These are private managed are plans that provide not only Part D drug coverage, but also all other Medicare-covered services.  If you have one of these plans, you can no longer use your Original Medicare card, but instead must receive all services through the Medicare Advantage plan.  Make sure that your doctors, hospitals, and other providers are in the plan's network before enrolling.  The Medicare Advantage plans offered vary from county to county; this list only includes the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau County.  Visit the CMS website or use the Medicare Options Compare website to see other counties, and to compare and learn more about specific Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Benchmark PDPs and Actions Needed for 2009
This list shows all of the PDPs whose monthly premiums were fully subsidized by the Extra Help program in 2008.  The list indicates which of these plans would still have $0 premiums for Extra Help beneficiaries in 2009.  For those that do not, the list indicates which beneficiaries will be re-assigned to a new plan, and how much their premium will be if they remain.  It also includes an additional plan that became "benchmark" in 2009.  This list is only valid for New York State.
